Author's note: I need to write more fic. For the last two weeks of
awdt prompts, “…and nothing happened” and “you’re very tempting, but I can’t”.
“Stay with me.” Her voice was a soft lilt that seemed to dissolve into the close, musky air of the bedroom.
“You’re very tempting but I can’t. You know I can’t.” He searched for his second shoe, eventually finding it under the dresser.
“I know. But I can ask anyway.” Her eyes bored holes through her pillow, the half-light causing the curve of her back to glow under its sheen of sweat.
“I hate saying no to you. If I could I’d stay here forever with you.” He put a finger under her chin, tilting her head up for one last kiss. Her lips were dark and slightly swollen, her cheeks pink from his stubble.
“Promise me you’ll be safe.” She always asked that before he left.
“I promise. I’ll be home again before you know it.” He always said that too. He picked up his badge from the dresser and slipped it into his pocket, then shrugged into the shoulder holster. She watched from the nest of tangled sheets.
“Stay.” The single word was muffled into oblivion, covered by the sound of the door being shut behind him. She listened closely to the sound of keys being picked up from the hall table, the front door closing too sharply in the wind, the car starting and backing out of the driveway, the engine fading into the distance. She held her breath, waiting to hear them repeat in the opposite order. She knew he couldn’t stay, but she always hoped he would. She waited... and nothing happened.
